Has this ever happened to you? You left all your makeup at home and don’t have time to run home to glam up before the big holiday party – where you’ll finally get a chance to get closer to that hottie in accounting that you’ve been drooling over?
Never fear! Just hit the nearest drugstore (like Walgreens) and for less than your yankee swap cost you, you can pick up just a few essentials to make you look party-perfect.
The face is easy! All you need is a little foundation touch-up. Pick out a pressed powder compact that’s just a hint lighter than your skin tone – try to find a hydrating type that will give you the pick-up that you need without too much of that drying powder. Do a once-over and keep it in your clutch for touch-ups later.
The Choice is yours: Eyes or lips?
One of the biggest mistakes ladies make in over-doing their make-up is doing too much. You can have bold eyes or bold lips – you can’t have them both.
To start your bold eye, pick up a a small eye-shadow quad with some party-friendly colors. You’ll want a lighter base coat for your eyelid up to your brow and a dark color along your upper and lower lash line for a sexy, smouldering look. A third color can add a pop of color and/or sparkle above the smoulder. Finish it up with a heavy line of basic black liner on your top and bottom lash lines and black mascara for big, bold lashes.
Again, with a bold eye you’ll want to go easy on the face and lips. A sheer, pink-tinted gloss will do for both. Just smooth some gloss on your cheeks with your middle finger and blend out. Then, apply a sheer coat on your lips and you’re good to go.
Want a little something extra? Pick up some sparkle powder and lightly sweep a line under your brow, at the tops of your cheeks, and a smidge around the eyes. Now you’re shining!
It’s a myth – there is no perfect red lipstick for every complexion. If you can, good for you. Otherwise, try out a bold pink or fuchsia shade, which is easier to match with a wider variety of skin tones. Choose a normal lipstick (skip those extended wear, 24-hour shades – which are usually a sticky, stained mess) – I like a bold solid color, but you may want a bit of sparkle in there, too. Just make sure it’s a full-tint and not sheer. Once you’ve got your lipstick, pick out a liner with as close to the same shade as possible. (Do NOT go darker. I repeat, NEVER EVER go with a darker color lip liner!)
To start your perfect bold lip, line and then fill in your lips with the liner pencil. This will give you a foundation tint that will help your color last longer. Apply a coat of lipstick and then blot well with a tissue. Apply a second coat, blot, and you’re ready to go. Keep the tube with you for touch-ups throughout the night. For a sexy, pouty look add a bit of gloss the the middle of your lower lip.
Next you’ll want a simple, classic eye, to compliment your big, bold lips. You can go with a basic black liner along the top lash line. I could suggest skipping the lower lash line, or applying a very light line. We want your lips to stand out, not your eyes. You can add some neutral eyeshadow, and maybe a little bit of sparkle to the lids, but leave it at that, and then finish off with a few coats of basic mascara. If you think you’ll need a bit of color on your cheeks, try the lip gloss trick I mentioned above.
Now pick up a cute little makeup case for your new party makeup and leave it in your car. Now you’ll always have the tools to make yourself party-perfect!
