Summer Whites

by Athena on June 13, 2011

Summer heat makes for a great time to enjoy a few cocktails  ’al fresco’.  Being outside really whets my palate for drinks that are light and crisp. I find white wines perfect for summertime happy hours on the deck.  Here are a few of my favorites just in time for the official start of summer!

Pacific Rim Rieslings

Pacific Rim is one of my favorite wine brands. They are very reasonably priced (one bottle is $10 or under). They offer dry, medium and sweet varieties, and all of them are delicious.  My favorite is the sweet riesling, which has a fruity flavor with undertones of peach and pineapple.

Barefoot Moscato

Moscato or Muscat wines are also a sweet variety. Moscato’s are a little bit crisper than a sweet riesling in my estimation. You can also get sparkling Moscato wines which are simply fantastic.  Barefoot is another brand that is easy on your wallet (less than $10 per bottle) an can be found in nearly every liquor store around.  This Moscato wine is chock full of the flavors of apricot and and peach and is delicious on a warm summer evening.

Trader Joe’s Whites

Trader Joes is known for their wines! Yes, it is true! If you are lucky enough to have a Trader Joes in your state, do a search for stores that sell alcohol (this will vary by county or town).  Their ‘three buck chuck’ (Charles Shaw) wine is a delicious treat for three dollars! Hard to believe yes, but true.  I also hear that Whole Foods is soon going to be offering their own line of two or three dollar wines.  Check out Trader Joes page here for tons of helpful information on wine pairings.

Moscato is one of my favorite wines. A perfect finish to a light summer meal/day. Never tried the Barefoot (is it from Cali?), but looking forward to it! Any other recommendations for a good moscato?

I am usually not a fan of Chardonnay, but Cupcake Wineries have turned me into a devotee!

Then again, Cupcake Wines can do no wrong by me…

Cupcake wines are always good! Another decent riesling is the POLKA DOT brand… they have a drier and a sweeter variety .. I like the sweeter ones better, but both are excellent!
