All Watches Are Not Created Equal

by Megan on July 15, 2010

I worked my way through college selling jewelry at Service Merchandise (Don’t laugh – “America’s Leading Jeweler” was the top selling jewelry store in the US.) and I learned a LOT about jewelry. The 4 C’s of diamonds, the difference between 10, 14 & 18k gold and the value of a good watch.

Watches come in all shapes, sizes and price points. The inexpensive but reliable, mid range, and OMG just HOW many zeros is that!?

There’s a vast market for each of these levels. And many are used very differently. The old reliable  under $50 watches are excellent for everyday use. They take a beating and keep on ticking. And if they stop ticking, it’s reasonably inexpensive to replace it.

MovadoOn the other hand, expensive watches have their place as well. Of course, at that price they’re not called watches, they’re called timepieces. This is the watch that you deserve when you graduate college, make partner, celebrate your 50th anniversary. It can be a piece of art. And it’s usually worn only on special occasions.

Movado watches are one example of the “special occasion” watch. They tend to run on the more expensive side and are well-known for the sleek, clean look with the signature dot at 12 o’clock. They are, without a doubt, works of art.

I don’t own a Movado myself but if i did, it would probably the one on the right (from ShopNBC). Which would you choose?

What a great idea for a blog! I must admit I don’t know much about shopping. I usually go to a store that’s close to home and where I can run in and out as fast as possible. It sure is fun to look at some beautiful items though!! Do you have a “follow” button?
