Give the Gift of Sustainability

Beatrice's Goat
My mom works as a librarian in an elementary school and occasionally she gets overwhelmed so I help shelve books on the weekend.  While helping my mother (a librarian) put away books recently, I found a book called Beatrice’s Goat by Page McBrier.  I sat down and read the story (I love children’s books, so this happens often when I am helping).  The book is a wonderfully uplifting and touching story of a girl in poverty stricken rural Uganda.  She dreams of going to school but knows her family will never be able to afford the supplies to go to school.

This all changes one day when Beatrice and her mom travel to a drop off point for a relief organization (Heifer International) who gives the family a pregnant goat.  One single goat changes the entire financial outlook for the family.  The book details how the gift of one goat helps the family not only financially but educationally too.

This got me looking into Heifer.org.  Through their gift catalog you can give the gift of a goat (or even just a part of a goat if you can’t afford a whole goat), pig, or even a flock of chicks or a hive of bees.  These would make excellent Christmas gifts for the person who has everything….they have card inserts that you can print out telling your recipient about the gift you gave in their honor…and what that gift will mean to the actual recipient.  Or if your prefer you can send an official Heifer.org ecard announcing your gift. This literally, is the gift that keeps on giving.
